| Manaus |
| The City of Manaus was a minor outpost until the 19th Century rubber boom. Today it is home to some 2.5 million people. |
| From the passenger docks, thousands of people are transported downriver to the Brazilian coast and upriver to Peru and Bolivia every day. |
| The importance of the Amazon River for transportation is apparent from the City's streets with piles of containers dwarfing neighbouring buildings. |
| Just about every building has a shop at ground level but, as if this weren't enough, during the day the streets become crowded with stands selling pretty much anything. |
| Whilst the architectural emphasis is on the new, there are still some reminders of Manaus' Colonial past. |
| Riverside life. |
| We went to see the opera ‘Norma’ in Manaus’ famous opera house. |
