Breaking Down
After much pushing of our bikes for two long days, disaster struck again and Jeremy’s rear derailer hanger snapped.
We reluctantly had to accept a lift from some people we had met several days before, who took us to the nearest town - Novo Progresso.
They were driving a cattle truck. The bikes and panniers went in the back on a bed of manure. Luckily we got to sit in the cabin so we didn’t have to endure the smell for the whole journey.
Even this ride did not go smoothly, but we made it to Novo Progresso eventually.
‘Specialised’ parts are not available in this part of the world so Jeremy and some local mechanics worked on producing something similar while Beth did an interview and spoke to the English class at the local language school. The car wash guys washed our bikes for free when they saw the manure.
