Cattle Drive
As we got further south we entered Brazil's cattle country. Herds being moved from one grazing area to another are a frequent cause of traffic jams.
This type of cow is prized for its meat. It has a distinctive hump, slices of which are one of the delicacies served in meat restaurants.
The cattle herders are known as 'Gauchos' and are skilful riders controlling herds of several thousand livestock at a time.
The lead man blows a spiral horn which sounds like something between a Tibetan temple horn and a didgeridoo. For some reason the cows like to follow the sound.
Calves which are too young to walk are brought in a cart behind.
