Bonito
From Cuiaba we headed away from the plains to visit a town called ‘Bonito’ which is Spanish for beautiful. We had been assured by the locals that it was indeed very beautiful and thought we should see for ourselves.
One of the things that Bonito is famous for is its freshwater rivers which are incredibly clear. We hired some snorkels and wetsuits to have a look.
We spent an afternoon floating downstream in the clear waters surrounded by thousands of fish, so tame that you can almost touch them.
The cliffs of this deep, circular hollow provide a home to a large colony of scarlet Macaws who nest here out of the reach of big cats and snakes, their main predators.
We went there at dusk to watch them coming in to roost. They seem to enjoy hearing the echo of their squawks within the hole which rise to an impressive volume.
This cave with its deep blue lake inside is another of Bonito’s most famous attractions.
